This section provides answers to frequently asked questions about different aspects and access policies to the contents of Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro for purposes related to visitation, research, publication and/or use of images.

INSTITUTIONAL

+What is the Institute?

Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro is a non-profit civil society organization of collective interest. Its Statute is registered with the 4º Oficial de Registro de Títulos e Documentos e Civil de Pessoas Jurídicas of the capital of São Paulo, under No. 201570/ 90, on May 15th, 1990.

+How does the administration work?

According to its Statute in effect and in accordance with the Complementary Law No. 846 of 1998, which provides for the structure of OSs – Social Organizations of the State, the administration is formed by the Assembly of Associates, Board of Directors, Board of Directors and Fiscal Council. The Institute obtained OS certification in October 2016.

+What is the relation with the Glass House?

Glass House, the first work built by Lina Bo Bardi, has been the Institute’s headquarters since its foundation in 1990 by the Bardi couple. In 2017, with a focus on institutional communication, the work became part of the institution’s name: Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro.

+Who founded the Institute?

Lina Bo Bardi and Pietro Maria Bardi founded, in 1990, what was then called Instituto Quadrante. In 1993, a year after Lina’s death, Pietro Maria Bardi changed the name to “Instituto Lina Bo e PM Bardi”, thus consolidating the couple’s trajectory and legacy. In 2017, with a focus on institutional communication, the Institute was renamed Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro.

+How is the Institute maintained?

The Institute, as a private association, does not receive public funds and is supported by donations, sale of copyrights and sponsorships.

+What is the legacy of Lina Bo Bardi and Pietro Maria Bardi?

Italians, Lina Bo and her husband Pietro Maria Bardi arrived in Brazil in 1946 and became naturalized Brazilians in 1953. They were responsible for relevant interventions in the Brazilian cultural scene based on two main axis: architecture and art, always focusing on the people.

+Who was Lina Bo Bardi?

The Italian architect Lina Bo Bardi worked in different areas of knowledge beyond architecture such as design, education, cinema, fashion, environment, restoration, heritage, curatorship, furniture. Learn more.

+Who was Pietro Maria Bardi?

Pietro, Italian, was a self-taught journalist, art dealer, curator, writer, and art critic. He arrived in Brazil in 1946 with his wife Lina Bo Bardi, and founded MASP alongside Assis Chateaubriand, in 1947. He invested in the professionalization and consolidation of the cultural area in the country.  Learn more.

Glass House

+When was the Glass House built?

The initial project covers the period 1947/1949 and the construction was completed between 1951 and 1952.

+Whose is the Glass House project?

Lina Bo Bardi signs the project. The Glass House was the first work built by the architect, completed in 1951/52.

+When was the Glass House open to visitors?

Glass House opened to visitors for the first time in 2013, on the occasion of the exhibition by Hans Obrist: Inside Outside, which brought together around 10 thousand people in just one month. As of 2015, with the implementation of the Educational Program, Glass House has differentiated visits and activities for the public, without interruption until today. Visits take place on specific days and hours.

+What is the relationship between the Glass House and the Institute?

Glass House has been the Institute’s headquarters since 1990 and, before that, the Bardi’s residence for over 45 years. It also houses its archive and is the space for the Instituto Bardi’s cultural activities.

VISITS

+How do visits to Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro works?

Due to the current pandemic, Glass House will only be open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays, with guided tours by educators at the following times: 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. The visits are carried out in two languages: English and Spanish, in addition to Portuguese, and have an average duration of 1h15 minutes.

+Is it necessary to schedule the visit?

Scheduling is required and is done exclusively by email: infobardi@institutobardi.org.

+How much does the ticket cost?

The values are R$ 30.00 (full), R$ 15.00 (half ticket for students, teachers, seniors), and free of charge for children up to 10 years old, students and teachers of public elementary and high schools, guides accredited and ICOM members.

+Can I buy tickets in advance?

Yes. Tickets can be purchased through the Inti platform, through the link casadevidro.byinti.com, or on site, prior to the visit. It is recommended to arrive 10 minutes before time to purchase or validate the ticket.

+Are there any days with free entry?

Considering that the tickets are an important source of revenue for the maintenance of the space – and because we have a reduced staff and only two days available for visitation – we are currently unable to implement a day with free admission.

+I will not be in São Paulo on visiting days, is there any other possibility for visitation?

Due to the current pandemic, the Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro is open for public visitation only on Fridays and Saturdays. However, considering exceptional cases and the availability of educators, it is possible to meet specific and exclusive demands on other days, with prior appointment. In this case, the value of the individual ticket will be R$60.00 – not having half a ticket.

+Can I photograph the spaces of the Glass House during the visit?

Only photographs of the exterior of the House are allowed. Photographs of the interior are prohibited during the visit.

+Can I carry out academic or private non-profit photo essays or even research during visits?

No. Visiting hours are intended only for accessing information on the different contents that involve the Glass House: architecture, Lina and Bardi, exhibited collection, among other topics. Any misuse will be subject to legal sanctions.

+How can I visit the other buildings built by Lina Bo Bardi?

Lina Bo Bardi accomplished relevant architectural works, in addition to Glass House, in different states of Brazil. Information on visits to the main works located in São Paulo and Bahia is available on the websites and contacts below:

EVENTS

+Is it possible to hold private events at Glass House, such as essays, weddings and birthdays?

The guidelines for the use of space are related to the different areas of activity of Lina Bo and Pietro Maria Bardi: architecture, fashion, design, innovation, education, art, culture, among others. For more details, access the RENT THE SPACE page here on the website.

+Can I photograph campaigns and photographic essays of brands at Glass House?

Yes. The assignment of use of space for corporate rehearsals and campaigns constitute an important source of revenue for the maintenance of the Institute’s activities, however, they are also subject to approval and adaptation to the guidelines and policies for the conservation of the property, which is a heritage listed in levels: municipal, state and federal. +Is it possible to hold corporate events at Glass House?

Yes, if they are in line with the space usage guidelines and policies. Observing capacity, theme and schedule availability. For more information, send your request to: infobardi@institutobardi.org

+Are there specific days for holding events at Glass House?

Yes, the days available are: Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

+I’m an artist and would like to hold an independent exhibition at Glass House, is it possible?

If your proposal is aligned with the central themes of the Institute’s curatorship and meets the requirement to use the space, it is possible. For this, it is necessary to submit a detailed proposal, involving curatorship and works, which will be submitted for approval to integrate the annual programming of the space.

ARCHIVE/SURVEY: REQUESTS

+I would like to do research in the archives of Lina Bo Bardi and Pietro Maria Bardi. What should I do?

One of the mission points of Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro is the dissemination of knowledge and encouragement of intellectual and academic production. Research is welcome, but is restricted to postgraduate level researchers only. To carry out your research, simply fill in the form for completing the survey on the REQUESTS page.

+I would like to study some of the works of Lina Bo Bardi and/or Pietro Maria Bardi, or a particular aspect of their work. What should I do?

The information you are looking for can be found in some of the publications available on the market or in libraries. Here on the site you can find a selection of the couple’s bibliography in BARDI COUPLE.

+I would like to use images or photos of Lina Bo Bardi or Pietro Maria Bardi or their works in a fashion, promotional or commercial campaign. How should I proceed?

Even with direct authorization from the owners to film any works by Lina Bo Bardi, it is necessary to inform the Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro. As a general policy, direct or indirect association with the works of Lina Bo Bardi or the use of the architect’s name in commercial activities of any kind or nature is not permitted.

+We are a video/cinema producer and would like to produce audiovisual material by Lina Bo Bardi/Pietro Maria Bardi. How shall we proceed?

For the analysis of this matter, Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro needs consistent information on the script, proposal, objective, direction and cast, which will be submitted for approval by the Board of Directors and are subject to the guidelines for the use of space and copyright. LICENSING AND COPYRIGHT

+Why pay a copyright fee?

Resources originating from copyrights are an important source of revenue for the maintenance of the Institute’s activities and its headquarters, the Glass House, the production of the requested images, as well as the administrative work necessary to fulfill your request. The handling fee directly supports the Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro and helps to contribute to the conservation and management of the archives. Your payment of the copyright fee grants you the right to use the requested images.

 

+Can I reproduce images and documents related to Lina Bo Bardi / P.M. Bardi, from third parties (collectors, owners, photographers, ex-partners, collaborators, etc)?

No. Regardless of who owns the work or document, copyright remains with Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro.

+Can previously published material that is related to Lina Bo Bardi and/or Pietro Maria Bardi be reproduced?

The use of material published by third parties, which is not purely personal and private, requires prior authorization from both the author and the Institute and involves property rights. More information: infobardi@institutobardi.org

+I am interested in licensing products based on works by Lina Bo Bardi, is it possible?

Product licensing is one of the Institute’s sources of income, send your proposal or request more information by email: infobardi@institutobardi.org 

+Are there already licensed Lina Bo Bardi products?

Yes. The furniture designed by Lina has great interest and acceptance in Brazil and abroad. Currently, the Institute maintains licensing agreements with important companies: Arper, an Italian company, which has been manufacturing Bardi’s Bowl since 2013; Etel Design, which since 2015 has produced a set of furniture pieces by Lina, including the Brass ball, Tripod, Rocking chair and Sete de Abril chairs, among others; Baraúna, responsible for manufacturing the girafinha chairs and friar Egídio. In addition to furniture, there is also Talento Jóias e Lumini, which in 2018 launched Lina Bo Bardi’s kitchen lamps. For more details, access the EDITIONS page here on the website.

+I own a piece of furniture designed by Lina Bo Bardi. How can I get a certificate of authenticity for the part?

As the holder of the copyright of Lina Bo Bardi, Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro is the only institution that carries out analyzes of third-party furniture pieces attributed to Lina Bo Bardi and provides, through intensive research, certification of authenticity. It is necessary to send the piece to the Institute, which carries out the process upon payment of a fixed fee, regardless of the result. IMAGE USE

+Can I make photo or video recordings of Lina Bo Bardi’s buildings?

As Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro does not own or participate in the management of any other works by Lina Bo Bardi, with the exception of Glass House, it is important to emphasize the need for formal authorization from the owner of these buildings and works before accessing them, indicating the purpose of the images.

In the event of material production, publication of these images – photographs or videos – authorization is also required from the Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro, which holds the rights to all intellectual work by Lina and Pietro, including the use of their names.

+Can I use images or photos of Lina Bo Bardi, Pietro Maria Bardi and/or their architectural works in a fashion, promotional or commercial campaign? How should I proceed?
